AC Repair Tips

Many Orlando homeowners face the unfortunate dilemma of a broken air conditioner in the summertime. So how do you know when it’s time to call in the professionals? Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning, Inc. understands the stress that comes with a broken or faulty unit. As a result, we’ve compiled a list of the five most common signs that it’s time to call a trusted AC repairman in Orlando, FL. Follow these helpful AC tips below.

  1. Your air conditioner is leaking water

One of the most well-known signs that your air conditioner needs to be repaired is when it starts leaking water. The leak could be coming from the unit itself or the surrounding ductwork. This can signify several issues, such as a clogged drainage line or a refrigerant leak. A professional must address either issue to avoid further damage to the unit.

  1. Your air conditioner isn’t blowing cold air

Warm air could indicate an issue with the refrigerant levels. While many people can add more refrigerant to the unit on their own, adding too much or too little may cause problems to your AC unit. It’s always best to call in Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning, Inc. Our staff knows how to check the levels and add the right amount of refrigerant.

  1. Your air conditioner is making strange noises

If your air conditioner unit makes strange noises like banging, grinding, or squealing, there may be a problem with one of the internal components. One of the parts may need to be repaired or replaced with a new one. An AC specialist in Orlando, FL, should be able to diagnose the problem and provide a solution.

  1. Your air conditioner isn’t turning on

If your air conditioner doesn’t turn on at all, there is likely an issue with one or more of the electrical components. You should not attempt to repair these components on your own. Instead, call in an Orlando AC professional with the knowledge and experience to safely repair the unit.

  1. Your energy bills are rising

If you notice your energy bills starting to rise, even though you haven’t changed your usage habits, it could mean your air conditioner is not operating as efficiently as it should be. Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning, Inc. in Orlando, FL, can inspect the unit and look for any issues that may be causing it to use more energy than necessary.

How to prevent air conditioner problems

The best way to deal with an air conditioner issue is to prevent them from happening in the first place. Homeowners and business owners can start by changing the air filter regularly. A dirty filter may reduce the efficiency of your unit and make it work harder than needed.

The area around your air conditioner should also be free and clear of debris to ensure that the unit has enough airflow to operate properly. So if you have an outdoor unit, trim back any trees or shrubs that are growing too close.

Kenny Haslacker Tribute

On Friday, November 5th, one of our beloved employees passed away. It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Kenny Haslacker. He had been with our company for over 11 years. He was a top gun, NATE certified service technician. One of the best we have ever known. He loved to fix things that were broke. Kenny was a hard worker, loyal, and consistent.  He took great pride in his work.  Our customers loved him and asked for him by name. They were willing to wait for service until he was available. Kenny had a quick wit and a good sense of humor. He enjoyed collecting old things. He had a collectible antique motorcycle and a classic BMW sports car. Kenny enjoyed tinkering with and fixing them up. He liked to go to pawn shops and find old movies to watch. Besides old movies, he loved Family Guy and Beavis and Butthead. Kenny loved his home in Christmas, FL. He considered BHAC to be his extended family and we loved having him on our team. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

A celebration of life service is being planned for December and we will provide the details once they are finalized.

5 Common Causes of Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air

Air conditioner blowing hot air?

Hot air from air conditioning units is a common service call at Bob Heinmiller. AC units have many parts that should all function properly in order to cool your home. Sometimes hot air is resolved with a simple fix, while others require the help of a professional. If you are frustrated with your AC unit, the experts at Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning can help. Here are 5 of the most common causes of why your air conditioner is blowing hot air.

1. Check your air conditioner thermostat for issues

air conditioner blowing hot air

It may sound obvious, but you should try to check the thermostat before doing anything else. Sometimes people accidentally set the controls to heat their home instead of cool. If this is the case, flip the setting back and wait to see if the unit begins blowing cool air once again. Also, make sure the batteries are working and the temperature is not set too high.

2. Check for electrical issues with your AC

Make sure your system has power by checking your electrical panel or circuit breaker. When too much power is required to run your air conditioner, the breaker may shut off automatically as a safety precaution. If this continues to happen for seemingly no reason, it is important to contact a professional technician as soon as possible.

3. Dirty condenser coils from debris

While the condenser may look like a strong and efficient piece of machinery, the coils can be damaged by debris. This is what results in your unit blowing warm air. If you believe your condenser coil is dirty, turn off the unit and inspect it. Feel free to remove any leaves or other outdoor debris as needed. If the system is still not cooling efficiently, call Bob Heinmiller AC for a quick and easy inspection.

4. Low refrigerant, or a refrigerant leak

The refrigerant flows through your air conditioning system to make the cooling function happen. If there is a leak, your system loses the ability to cool your home. Based on the size of the refrigerant leak, this can happen slowly or all at once. Because refrigerant is a toxic substance, you should contact a trained technician right away. Remember to schedule an annual checkup to prevent coolant leaks from happening in the first place.

5. A clogged air filter can cause hot air

Try to remember the last time you changed your air conditioning filter. Most people do not think about changing it until something goes wrong. The filter is designed to remove contaminants such as dust and debris from the air flowing through your system. Dirty air filters cause blockages and reduce your cooling efficiency significantly.

Dirty air filters slow down your system and cause a host of operational issues, including preventing the proper flow of air. Not only that, but an air filter is designed to remove harmful airborne contaminants before it circulates through your home. When filters are dirty, they are unable to perform this task properly. Bob Heinmiller suggests changing your air filter several times per year, based on your allergies the number of pets in your home.

Upgrade your thermostat

If you already own a working air conditioner, there is no need to upgrade your HVAC system. However, many families invest in a smart thermostat to make their air conditioner even more efficient. Many of these thermostats come with their own smartphone application to give you more control over the temperature. Bob Heinmiller can give you some helpful recommendations about thermostats that can save you on high energy bills.

Why Does My Air Conditioner Smell?

air conditioner smells

Have you noticed a bad smell every time your air conditioners kicks on? Bad smells can indicate that something is wrong with your HVAC system. Sometimes this means an electrical issue, while others experience mold and mildew. Instead of covering up the smell with aerosol sprays or scented candles, the issue will need to be faced head-on.

Today, you will learn about what different smells mean and how to identify the problem quickly before more extensive repairs are needed in the future. If you believe your air conditioner is the cause of a smelly odor inside your home, call Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning for a consultation in Orlando, Florida. We can help you find the source of the problem and get your HVAC system back on track.

Your AC smells musty

This is probably the most common complaint we hear from residents in Orlando. A musty odor indicates that mold or mildew has formed in your air conditioning unit, usually as a result of excess moisture. An HVAC technician can fix this issue and make sure the system is draining properly to prevent any mold from returning in the future.

Your AC smells like feet

When certain bacteria or dirt build up on your air conditioner’s evaporator coil, this can lead to issues like mold. Mold, or a clogged or dirty air conditioning system, may produce a smell similar to feet or dirty socks. People in the industry often call this phenomenon Dirty Sock Syndrome. You will want to make sure the coil is cleaned to address this smell.

Your AC smells like skunk

Unfortunately, a skunk-like scent could indicate a gas leak in your system. Methyl mercaptan is a dangerous gas that can put your family members at risk, so we strongly recommend evacuating the area and contacting a trained professional as soon as possible. Do not ignore this smell and do not attempt to correct this issue by yourself.

Your AC smells like rotten eggs

If your home smells like rotten eggs, you may have a dead animal such as a rodent or bird in your air duct. Sometimes these animals like to hide in ducts during the winter months, where they sometimes die and decompose. Your ducts will need to be cleaned to eliminate the smell as well as any animal remains that may be present.

When to get professional help

It is important to contact a professional to address any concerning smells caused by your HVAC system, especially if you value your health and comfort. Do not ignore any odors simply because they are foul or uncomfortable. Why does my house smell musty?

All homes have their own distinctive odors that may change over time. Your heating and cooling system in Central Florida, however, should smell crisp and clean, due to the air filter in the central air system. If the air filter is not replaced on a regular basis, then dust and other particles will get stuck and start floating around the home. To get rid of a musty, moldy, or stale smell, Bob Heinmiller AC suggests replacing the air filter twice a year. Homeowners with pets may want to change their air filters more frequently.

Why is my heating and cooling system making noises?

As a heating and cooling system works, the various parts to vibrate and move around. The majority of homeowners can relax knowing their HVAC system is working as normal. Some noises, on the other hand, are a signal for a more serious condition. Perhaps a small piece has gotten loose after years of use. To truly understand the source of the noise, it is better to schedule a consultation with a trained technician. They can let you know whether your AC unit needs to be repaired or replaced.

How much with a repair or replacement cost?

How to Tell if Your Heater is Inefficient

If you are concerned that your heater is not doing its job, you’re not alone. Many homeowners don’t know how to tell if their HVAC systems are working efficiently. Although heaters in Central Florida are not as used as extensively as air conditioning systems, that does not mean we don’t need them to function. Even business owners with an inefficient heating system can lose thousands of dollars each year in wasted energy. When the temperatures drop, you need your heater to be there for you. Bob Heinmiller AC can address the signs of a poor heater to keep your home running smoothly again.

An unusually high energy bill

Have you been comparing your bill from month to month only to realize that money is flying out the door? When your heating bill is draining your budget with no noticeable change in the weather, it could mean that your system is wasting too much energy to function well. This is because the system has to work even harder to produce the heat needed for your home or business. If this is the case, you may need a repair or replacement by a skilled HVAC technician in Orlando who can help save you more money in the long run.

The system is extra noisy

It’s normal to hear a little noise coming from your system, but if the sound gets louder over time, this could be an indication that something is wrong. Rattling, for instance, is a sign of loose screws or other problems. Screeching or squealing may be caused by further damage. This is why it is essential to have an experienced heating and cooling technician on the case. They can discover the source of the sound and let you know what is needed to get the system working efficiently again.

Issues with your thermostat

Some individuals find problems with the thermostat sensor of their unit. This could mean that each room in the house is a different temperature, or that you are not getting the temperature you expect from your settings. First, a technician should check the thermostat to make sure it is maintained at the right temperature. If there is an issue, they can easily repair the malfunctioning component. Tips For Commercial AC Repair Orlando

No matter the season, businesses in Central Florida need to pay close attention to their air conditioning units. Even a small change in temperature can impact both employee efficiency and your bottom line. At Bob Heinmiller AC in Central Florida, our specialists ensure that your commercial system is in great shape year-round. Here is how to prevent a costly air conditioning-related problem in your commercial business.

Don’t Overload the System

In Central Florida, it can become incredibly hot, especially in the summer months. However, we strongly recommend you don’t push your HVAC system too hard. Otherwise, this could cause tremendous strain on your resources. Instead of placing the temperature on the coldest possible setting at all times, simply make sure the temperature is consistently cool. This helps avoid natural wear and tear as well as a high utility bill.

Regularly Replace Filters

Workplace HVAC systems and vents easily collect pollen, dirt, bacteria, and harmful mold, effecting your overall air quality. This is why at Bob Heinmiller AC we suggest regularly cleaning the vents and replacing the filters. Not only that, having a strong focus on maintenance prevents costly repairs in the future. For more information about when and how you can clean the vents and replace the filters, reach out to a skilled member of our air conditioning team in Orlando.

Check For Potential Issues

Speaking of maintenance, business owners need to regularly check their HVAC system for signs of issues year-round. Tune-ups should be scheduled twice per year to identify and address minor problems. At Bob Heinmiller AC, we can ensure your commercial air conditioning unit and HVAC system runs seamlessly. No more unplanned breakdowns! Some common signs of potential issues include:

  • Foul-smelling odors or poor indoor air quality
  • Strange or loud sounds coming from your system
  • Inconsistent airflow or uneven cooling throughout the office
  • An unexpected rise in cooling costs each month
  • The system is blowing warm instead of cool air
  • There are signs of leaks or water damage around the unit

Keep Your Business Cool

Bob Heinmiller Air Conditioning understands that your company may have special AC needs or requirements. For instance, many business owners have a computer room that requires a certain temperature setting to keep the equipment running. Others may have special air filter requirements. How to Cool Your Home More Efficiently

In Central Florida, we’re lucky to have warm weather most days of the year. However, this does mean that cooling your home can get costly fairly quickly. At Bob Heinmiller AC, we’re experts in every aspect of air conditioning. While many of our clients are worried about the expense of keeping their home cool, there are many ways to improve the efficiency of your air conditioning system. In short, we want to help you save money with these tips and tricks!

  • Keep your blinds closed: did you know that most of the unwanted heat in your home comes through the window? On particularly hot days, simply pull the blinds and close the curtains to block out the rays of the sun. This can lower temperatures inside the house by up to 20 degrees or more. Even better, you can invest in blackout curtains, which naturally insulate the rooms in your home. These are especially helpful in windows that face the sun during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Insulate your home: speaking of insulation, closing off certain rooms will prevent cool air from leaking into those areas on sunny days. You can talk to a local air conditioning expert in Central Florida about which rooms, doors, and windows can be better insulated to save money.
  • Change your sheets and bedding. If you run hot at night, swapping the sheets for a lighter, cooler set will keep you from turning the thermostat down. We personally like cotton since it stays cool and breathes easier. You can also heat-proof your bed by purchasing a cool pillow.
  • Let in some of the night air. In the summer, temperatures tend to drop down at night. Make the most of the chilly night air by opening the windows a little. Remember to close the windows and curtains before it gets hot again in the morning.
  • Cook outside! Using the stove or oven inside increases the temperature in your home, causing your air conditioning system to work harder to cool down. This can make your electricity bill more expensive. Grilling outside is not only an enjoyable activity with friends and family, but it also means you will be using indoor cooking appliances less.

Schedule Routine Maintenance

This last point is essential in keeping your system in good shape so it can perform well. An AC inspection or maintenance should be scheduled at least once per year at your home in Central Florida. This allows a professional to make any adjustments as necessary, catch any potential issues before they occur, and make sure it’s cleaned to prevent future problems down the line.

If you are in need of an upgrade, the professionals at Bob Heinmiller AC can offer helpful suggestions about which is best for your situation. Most homes are equipped with a central air system, and upgrading can mean saving money on a long-term basis. With our years of experience as a licensed and insured air conditioning contractor, we guarantee you will be satisfied with our work.

4 Air Conditioner Sounds and What They Mean

Are you hearing strange noises when your air conditioner is on? While it’s common for AC units to make a few sounds when running, a loud hissing, buzzing, or clicking noise may indicate something is wrong with the AC unit. If you don’t fix the error soon, it may lead to more significant and expensive issues.

At Bob Heinmiller AC in the Orlando area, we are experts in Orlando air conditioning repair. Since 1990 we have provided residential and business areas with prompt, professional care. Our in-house technicians and experts have listed some of the most common noises you may hear from your air conditioner and what you can do to correct it.

Common Air Conditioning Noises and What They Might Mean

  1. Gurgling or running water: a healthy AC unit creates a bit of condensation, which means you may hear a dripping noise from time to time. However, if you hear splashing or running water, it is due to excess condensation from water that has built up in the system and is not draining properly. If you hear this noise accompanied by a leaky or dripping unit, please contact a professional right away.
  2. Clicking or clanking: this may be a sign of a loose or misaligned part inside the unit. This may be due to the age of the unit, whether or not it was properly installed, or simply a broken part. A clanking sound can also indicate that the fan is out of balance and is now hitting the other parts. If ignored, this problem could cause further damage to the unit.
  3. Buzzing: when loud enough to become a distraction, a buzzing sound is traditionally an electric issue. This may be due to the contactor relay switch, circuit breakers, fan motor, or other components. If this is the case, you should turn off the unit and reach out to a professional as soon as possible to prevent further damage or injury.
  4. Humming: while generally not a serious noise, a humming sound can arise from issues with the fan motor. Sometimes, when the home becomes very warm, the fan works harder to remove the hot air from the area. A humming sound may also indicate that something in the unit may be off, such as loose parts or wiring.

Be cautious if you hear a strange noise coming from your air conditioning unit. If the sound is especially loud or concerning, it’s best to turn off the unit until a licensed professional can take a look. At Bob Heinmiller AC, we realize that Orlando air conditioning repairs can be stressful, but it’s better to correct an issue while it is still manageable.
